Sirena Biological Station

Sirena Biological Station is located along the southwestern coast of the Osa Peninsula, (8-10 hours hike). It is important to take into account that on the road to Sirena, there are two spots where you can only go across at low tide. These spots are Punta La Chancha (a rocky formation) and Rio Claro. Do not cross Rio Claro by its mouth. There may be crocodiles and even sharks. Go up about 100 m from the river mouth to go across safely.

Located in the heart of the park, Sirena provides the ideal location to witness amazing biodiversity: giant trees, all five cat species found in Costa Rica (jaguar, jaguarundi, ocelot, margay, and puma), tapirs, peccaries, monkeys, crocodiles, birds, and snakes. It is a natural wonder of the world.

If you want to hike the web of trails that links Corcovado’s ranger stations from Sirena, you need to contact the park’s headquarters in Puerto Jiménez (Tel. (506) 2735-5036 or (506) 2735-5580), which are open Monday through Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or check the following website www.pncorcovado.com in order to reserve a place in their camping area or a bed in their ranger station (Make reservations at least one month in advance during the high season). It is recommended to stay at least 2 nights in Sirena, and allow for 1 day in and 1 day out hiking. We highly recommend hiring a local guide to make the most of your trip to Corcovado.
